Default Zoom and Layout preferences are ignored

I'm using Adobe Reader 9.0.0 and the automatic zoom feature is very annoying so I want to set the default zoom to 100% and default layout to single page continuous. This is apparently done from the Edit/Preferences/Page Display, however when I change the settings for "Default Layout and Zoom" they are ignored. Documents are still opened in the most annoying zoom and layout the reader can possibly choose. The FAQ doesn't give any clues as to why this might be happening.

      Any ideas?
