    Need help to uninstall 8.1.1

I tried to update my Adobe Reader 8.1.1, but the process failed. So, I tried to uninstall it via Add/Remove Programs, so that I could then install version 9.0. This too failed, with the message "This patch package could not be opened. Verify that the patch package exists and that you can access it, or contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer patch package." I went to the Reader Support Center and found that they offered 2 solutions using the Microsoft Windows Installer CleanUp Utility to remove corrupted registry entries or
      (2) Remove the Acrobat or Reader Windows Installer registry keys. I am not comfortable working my way around the registry, unless I know that what they are directing me to do is safe (if doing only what they list - like fllowing a recipe, I can do that). Does anyone know if these methods that they are listing are inclusive and generally safe if followed to the tee? Do you have other suggestions to try? Thanks,
