This happens if Reader is already started, and invisible. Perhaps you
have previously viewed a PDF in a browser.
Are you able to view files created with adobe 8, with the adobe reader 5???
Thanks a lot,

I am having the same problem as Jennifer, only worse. If I try to run Acrobat 5.0 (double-clicking acrobat.exe) Adobe Reader 8.0 pops up! Is there a way to have both Reader 8.0 and Acrobat 5.0 run on the same computer!?
It is not recommended to have two different Acrobat related products on
the same PC.
After installing Adobe Reader 8.1.2 system restarts and freezes (hangs, locks up)
I have Windows XP SP2, plenty of spare disk space and Adobe Reader 8.1.1.
The 8.1.2 Reader appeared to install OK and asked for the system to be restarted. When I accepted this it shut down and rebooted as expected,
but just before it was fully restarted it froze and I could do nothing.
I pressed the power switch and tried again but the same thing happened again.
To get back to a usable system I had to boot in safe mode and go back to a restore point.
I don't know if this is relevent but it stopped just before Nortom firewall usually starts.
I am keen to install the new version because of the security fixes.
Can anyone help?
Thanks in anticipation.
All security software should be turned off before the install. Norton
may have been your problem.
I had a fresh installation of Acrobat 8 installed when I updated to Reader 8.1.2. The same thing happened to me, i.e. when I try to open Acrobat, Reader opens instead. Distiller 8 opens without problems. I changed the name of the Reader exe file (AcroRd32.exe) and now it won´t open when I click on Reader. But when I click on Acrobat, Reader still opens! When I looked closer at the Acrobat.exe file, it has exactly the same date and time stamp (differs by only 5 minutes) and they are approximately the same size. So it seems as if my Acrobat.exe file in fact has been replaced by a Reader exe file. Weird, any ideas what can have happened?
PS My Acrobat 5 installation that worked OK before installing Reader 8.1.2 now also opens Reader, so I guess I have to try to uninstall all of them and install only the 8 again...

The usual thing. Reader is already running. Stop it in Task Manager.
Thanks, it did the trick. Wish there was some kind of error message for this situation.
