I have had the same issue since allowing Acrobat Reader to update over the weekend. I have attempted to uninstall the 8.1.1 version and reinstall and have the same error message occur. I am running Windows Vista Home Premium on 2 separate home computers and both computers now have the same issue.
When I attempted to uninstall and find an older version to reinstall from the Adobe website, I was unsuccessful. The only option is to install the newest version, which does not work.
Any assistance you can provide would be appreciated as I am now unable to read pdfs at all.
I am having the same problem. Windows Vista, HELP.

help has been given. Please follow it.
I had the same problems with Reader 8.1. At that time I had a Content Advisor turned on in IE 7. When I turned off the Content Advisor and then opened 8.1, I was able to successfully accept the EULA and turn OFF the Beyond Adobe splash screen without having to do the RegEdit fixes posted by Liam in the thread mentioned by Claudio. It appears that at least one of the problems is caused by the Content Advisor.
Hope this helps.
I've had the same problem but managed to fix it this way.
1 Download and install windows installer at http://ardownload.adobe.com/pub/adobe/reader/win/8.x/8.0/misc/WindowsInstaller-KB893803-v 2-x86.exe
2 Found a copy of Acrobat Reader 7.0.8 Standalone Full Installer (not 8!) on the internet here http://www.mydigitallife.info/2006/06/07/adobe-acrobat-reader-7-standalone-installer-full -download/
