Is this for PDF files on a particular web site (if so, can you say
Or is it for PDF files on all web sites?
Or is it for files on your hard disk?
It's for files on my hard drive and any off the internet. It was working this morning, then did an update (I think), then it wasn't opening.
I've contacted a buddy who works at Microsoft to help me through it, he had me remove all Adobe programs, then restart the computer. Then download the Adobe Reader again. It didn't work.
Ok, let's look at the files on your hard disk, since that's easier for
us to follow all the pieces.
You start Adobe Reader. Do you get the error?
You use file > open and choose a PDF. Do you get the error?
You double click on a PDF. Do you get the error?
Is this the EXACT text of the message? Note that the product isn't
called Adobe Acrobat Reader and hasn't been so for a number of years.
So if that is what it says we can be pretty sure that it isn't Adobe's
wow! hah. Okay, well when I open Odobe Reader 8 there is no error message. I can then go to file > open and choose a PDF and it opens just fine. It's only when I double click the file on the hard drive that I get that message.
Also, I noticed that it wants to download version 7. It appears Adobe is now on version 8.
Yes, the error message is EXACTLY as above. That's really odd. some kind of virus? Thanks for your help.
okay. So I right clicked the file, when to "open with">choose program. selected adobe reader 8.1, clicked the box for "always use the selected program to open this kind of file". It seems it's working just fine now.
I wonder what was causing that.
Yes, it's very odd. I think I've seen one or two other reports. I
wonder if it could be some kind of virus, trying to invite you to
download Adobe Reader from a different web site.
Do you remember where it tried to take you to download Reader? You
might be able to find it in your browser history.
This issue is because windows is set to open pdf files in 7 instead of 8. To fix the issue, uninstall all versions of Adobe Reader. Delete all the reader folders in c:\program files\adobe.
reinstall adobe 8. Open my computer, go to the 'tools' menu, choose 'Folder options'
Click on the 'file types' tab, scroll to 'pdf', highlight it and click the change button. Choose Adobe Reader 8.x fromt he list. Hit 'ok' twice.
Hope this helps!
