    Cannot start Adobe Reader 8 on WinXP

      For months, Adobe Reader 8 was working fine. I'm not sure what changed, but a couple of weeks ago, it quit working at all.

      * When I double-click the Reader icon on my desktop, nothing happens.

      * When I double-click a .pdf file, nothing happens.

      * When I open a .pdf file from a web page, I receive the following error message: "There is a problem with Adobe Acrobat/Reader. Please exit Adobe Acrobat/Reader and try again." Trying again, of course, does not help.

      I repaired Reader, removed and reinstalled it, removed and reinstalled it in safe mode, and even went back and deleted old folders and registry files left over from Reader 4.0. Nothing works.

      I had a similar problem with Reader 7. Never got it to work at all.

      Adobe Photoshop CS and ImageReady are also installed on my computer. They've been there for a long time, with no recent changes.

      Any ideas?
