(Nancy_Karlov) Jun 27, 2008 5:49 AM (in response to (Janet_Norman-Philips))Janet have you had any problems with the version 6 with the 98SE? I have read so many different problems associated with all these adobe reader versions that I am very undecided what to do, but I need the reader. Please let me know as soon as you can.
Thanks much. I am assuming you downloaded version 6, if not let me know that too.
Thanks again,

6. Re: I need Adobe Reader 6 for windows 98
(Janet_Norman-Philips) Jun 28, 2008 1:01 AM (in response to (Janet_Norman-Philips))Hi Nancy
I got hold of version 6 and it has loaded and tested OK ie I can open and read PDF documents. So I'm not aware of any problems but looking at the Adobe support/download info for PDF reader I did notice that there have been a number of updates for version 6, all of which are still available for download, all of which I presume are designed to rectify various issues - so I was intending to download these and update my version.
Hope that helps...

(Nancy_Karlov) Jun 28, 2008 1:53 AM (in response to (Janet_Norman-Philips))Hi Janet,
Thanks so much for responding. Did you use the site, http://www.brothersoft.com/adobe-reader-download-59854.html
to download version 6? If so, I will use the one you used,as I found another that says to load version 5 for 98XSE.
II haven't seen the updates to version 6, if you have a site I would sure appreciate the link to it. If you do apply them, please let me know if it screws up anything on your system.
I am by no means a computer wizard and need all the help I can get. So any help or info you can give me is greatly appreciated.
Thanks so much,
Nancy -
8. Re: I need Adobe Reader 6 for windows 98
(Aandi_Inston) Jun 28, 2008 6:12 AM (in response to (Nancy_Karlov))I strongly advise against downloading Reader from non-Adobe sites.
Mostly they are not authorized to offer it, and you have to ask why
they ARE offering it? Could they be including a virus with there
downloads, for example?

~graffiti Jun 29, 2008 5:07 PM (in response to (Janet_Norman-Philips))Shouldn't be any reason to scan them since they come right from Adobe's site (although not a bad idea if you are downloading them from somewhere else).
But, be sure and shut down you virus stuff during the install. Like with other applications, running anti-virus software while installing can cause troubles down the road. -
12. Re: I need Adobe Reader 6 for windows 98
(Ken_Kline) Jun 30, 2008 1:59 AM (in response to (Janet_Norman-Philips))Just saw this topic. I too am using Adobe Reader 6.0 on a Win98SE computer which I continue to use as my main operating system. I have also installed all the updates (installed the full 6.0.1 over 6.0 then all the other updates) so that 6.0 has now become 6.0.6. However, I am having the following problem: When I go to "Edit", "Preferences", "Page Display" comes up first. There is a section at the bottom "Magnification" with 2 boxes, Default Zoom, Max Fit Visible Zoom. Both boxes have question marks, other jibberish, what am I supposed to enter in these boxes? I keep on getting an error window saying "The value of the magnification must be "Fit Page", "Fit Width", "Fit Visible", "Actual Size", "Reflow" or it must be a value between 8.33% and 6400%", then won't let me make any other settings, I just keep getting the same error window. I am a non-techie so if someone can help, please make your reply easy to follow. Thanks. -

(Nancy_Karlov) Jun 30, 2008 2:38 AM (in response to (Janet_Norman-Philips))Ken,
When did this start happening, after one of the updates or after going to version 6.0?
Thanks,

14. Re: I need Adobe Reader 6 for windows 98
(Ken_Kline) Jun 30, 2008 4:00 PM (in response to (Janet_Norman-Philips))Hi Nancy, after going from 5.1 to 6.0. The only reason I went to 6.0 is because 5.1 won't open certain picture content from ebooks etc, only magazines it seems. 6.0 seems to open everything. In fact, I just went back to "Preferences" in 5.1 to get the same info. There it says to enter "Fit Width" for the first box, then "800% for the other box. Then 5.1 works perfectly. 6.0 won't even let me enter that info. I suspect that 6.0 really isn't compatible with 98SE. In fact, I put my problem into a separate message in this forum "Configuring Page Display in Preferences", have not got a reply. In all honesty, from my non-techie experience, Adobe Reader is a piece of Bloatware junk. There are other equally competent free replacements, most notably Foxit Reader, only a 2mb file, which essentially accomplishes the same functions as Adobe with a much smaller footprint. My only problem with Foxit is slow page opening in long books, magazines, perhaps not configuring it properly. I'll wait awhile to see if someone comes up with a concrete solution to my problem. If not I might just revert to Foxit, try to make it run faster. Thanks, Ken. -
15. Re: I need Adobe Reader 6 for windows 98
(Ken_Kline) Jun 30, 2008 5:16 PM (in response to (Janet_Norman-Philips))Hi Nancy. I went with my gut instincts deleting everything Adobe Reader from my computer, all of 6.0.6 + 5.1. I then installed Foxit Reader version 2.2 build 2129, the most recent version that still works with Win98SE. In "Edit", "Preferences", "Page Display", it fills in the 2 boxes with "Fit Width", "6400%", grey out so it can't be changed. I also uncheck "Display texts optimized for LCD screen" because I have a CRT monitor, everything works perfectly, even the slow page loading problem in large books, magazines seems to be gone. This whole exercise was worthwhile just to prove that Adobe Reader is not for me. Best of luck with your situation, Ken. -

(Nancy_Karlov) Jul 1, 2008 4:04 AM (in response to (Janet_Norman-Philips))Hi Ken, thanks for all the info. I went to the Foxit website and looked everywhere but couldn't find the place where they say what version 98SE will work with. Would you mind telling me where you found it and what site you downloaded from? I see there is a toolbar, did you download that?
Thank you, I am very non-techie obviously much more so than you.

(Nancy_Karlov) Jul 1, 2008 4:11 AM (in response to (Janet_Norman-Philips))Hi Claudio,
You gave a site ftp://ftp.adobe.com/pub/adobe/reader/win/6.x/6.0/enu
Janet said she used this and checked it for problems so was going to go with it, but am unfamiliar with "enu" downloading.
I am very computer illiterate when it comes to something I have never seen before. I have no idea how to download this type of a file, can you help?
Thanks,
Nancy -
18. Re: I need Adobe Reader 6 for windows 98
(Aandi_Inston) Jul 1, 2008 4:22 AM (in response to (Nancy_Karlov))> unfamiliar with "enu" downloading.
That's just part of the name. Copy and paste
ftp://ftp.adobe.com/pub/adobe/reader/win/6.x/6.0/enu
into your web browser and you are there.
This shows a list of files. The file you want is probably
AdbeRdr60_enu.exe . If you don't see the full name use View > List.
Pick the file you want, right click on it and choose Save Target As in
the usual way.

19. Re: I need Adobe Reader 6 for windows 98
(Ken_Kline) Jul 1, 2008 5:09 AM (in response to (Janet_Norman-Philips))Hi Nancy. I got Foxit from this site "http://www.softpedia.com/get/Office-tools/PDF/Foxit-PDF-Reader.shtml". There is a lot of info on this page, says for all versions of Windows. I checked it with my Avast virus scanner, appears to be a clean file. After install go to "Help", "Check for Updates Now". It will come up with a number of available updates, some of which will only work with the paid version of Foxit. The 2 I use are "GDIPlus" + "JPEG2000 + JBIG 2 Image Decoders", both essential to optimize the image capabilities of Foxit. Click "Add" for both of them, then install, follow the instructions. Then In "Edit", "Preferences", "Page Display", I also uncheck "Display texts optimized for LCD screen" because I have a CRT monitor, leave the check in if you have an LCD monitor. Then enjoy Foxit. Let me know how it turns out, Ken. -

23. Re: I need Adobe Reader 6 for windows 98
(Captain_Cook) Jul 27, 2008 1:08 AM (in response to (Janet_Norman-Philips))The reason why non-Adobe sites would be offering older versions of Reader is probably because Adobe doesn't seem to offer those older versions for download. But people still need them. That doesn't make it safe, nor does it make it legal, but it certainly defeats the silly idea that simply offering these older versions for download is in some way "suspicious." -
