can't remove older version of adobe reader

I've tried everything it says to on the Adobe site to try and remove and older version of Adobe Reader, version 7.0.8. I'm trying to remove it in order to upgrade to the newest version, because every time I try to open something using Adobe, my computer freezes and I have to manually shut it down.

Other than that problem, when I try to remove my current version it comes up with an error message that reads, "This patch package could not be opened. Verify that the patch package exists and that you can access it, or contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer patch package."

What does this mean? I've had Adobe on my computer since I purchased it in 2002 ... anyone have any idea what this means or how I can get my current version to work properly? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
