I wonder if you downloaded the Intel version.
Thanks for responding quickly. It's definitely the Mac installer package (it's called "AdbeRdr90_en_USi386.pkg", and it does open up. And I downloaded it via the Adobe site, which asks which version of Mac OS is being used, prior to even allowing a download.
That's the Intel version. Wrong version for your computer.
Choose the PowerPC version at the download page.
That was it. Very stupid on my part.

A tip which may help you recognise this sort of problem in future:
"i386" is a code used to talk about Intel processors. Anything with
this code isn't likely to work on a G5.
