Updater, how can I switch it off?

I'm sorry but if every silly little bit of software on my machine insisted on updating itself whenever it felt like then I'd barely have the machine time or bandwidth to do what I want.

It keeps fighting with my firewall.

It's a little document reader not an OS what the heck is it 'updating' anyway? Is this one of those 'ambush', 'imbed', 'guerilla' marketing thingie's? If it is then it's pretty sad.

Is it spyware and doing something daft like sending screens to some central adobe unit of all of my .pdf documents?

Looked through preferences but there was no option, does anyone know how I can disabled it?
