I am having the same problem and no luck. I have installed Reader and for a while the viewer worked. Then not. I checked Task Manager and a file called PDFPrevHndleShim.exe is running once I click on that office attachment but it's not apparent what it is doing.
I have read forums where M$ is being blamed, and others where it is Adobe. It HAS worked and I don't know what has broken it.
M$ Office 2007 SP2 (due when???) is supposed to have native support for PDF - maybe then it will work consistently.
Since no-one from Adobe has responded to you, if you have any luck, please let me know via this forum. I'll do the same.
I got this problem too, if anyone has a solution for this problem, please let me know too.
memo to adobe: i'm an seasoned windows programmer, and thus i have full a blown version of visual studio running on my machine. if you want to give me a debugging version of the previewer for collecting data about the problem, i will not balk at helping you.
run an office diagnostic -- while doing say makes littel to no sense, it magically worked for me!
I found this post and 2 years later the problem still exists...ha ha
I've just come to except it and don't invest any time trying to fix it.
