100% cpu AE7 using Magic Bullet Look Suite 2.0

      Hi

My pc is over 2Ghz and has 2 gigs of Ram and a high speed hard drive. My video is onboard but usually does very well with video rendering.

The only problem I seem to have is with Look Suite 2.0. I dont bother trying out the latest because it doesnt work with onboard video.

Anyway, 2.0 used to work perfectly fine for the 2 weeks I was rendering. But, recently it started giving me the "unknown exception caught by look suite" error. There does not seem to be a real fix for this.

But I monitored task manager for awhile while compiling projects. Loading effects filters like Curves, Twixtor and others didnt phase the CPU a bit. But after loading Look Suite and going through the presets, all of suddent the cpu went 100% and never came back down as long as AE7 is open. Even if I disable the plugins nothing changes.

So I tried saving the project with the plugins disabled in the composition. Then closed AE and reopened the project. Instant 100% cpu. Next, I deleted the Look Suite plugin from the composition. Reopened the project and everything was perfectly fine.

LOOK SUITE has some kind of incompatibility issue either with AE7 or another plugin that was running. I cannot be sure.

But the bottom line is this. Who's responsible? Adobe or Red Giant?

Red Giant doesn't seem to have a clue what to do. I dont want to upgrade to a version that works only with higher end graphics. I tried changing memory settings in AE and it really isnt needed. I am guessing the "unknown exception" is caused from the CPU overload because it pegs out the cpu while rendering and uses more and more of the page file as it runs, until it finally fails. But if Looks Suite wasn't already loading up on the cpu I would not have a problem. And, a week ago it wasn't hogging the resources. SOmething went snap.

      Sorry for the long rambling.

Sounds like it's time to do some trouble-shooting:

For your case, I'd start by trashing the preferences, uninstall and reinstall Look Suite and possibly AE.

Actually I think this hinges on OpenGL accelerqation, regardless. MBS has some rudimentary stuff already which it will use if it thinks the graphics system is up to it. Otherwise it will fallback to software-only mode. In your case that does not seem to function correctly. There's a number of things I could think of, but all of them are most certainly not to blame on RG nr on Adobe. The short version is that something in your graphics system has changed in the time in question. Maybe you updated Windows Media Player or something... There's literally an infinite number of thinkable reasons. Perhaps you can think it over and narrow it down.

If I remember correctly, LS2 had a GPU toggle switch built into the effect. Have you compared it with and without GPU render support?

My system has the Intel 945 which supposedly supports OpenGL 1.4 but if I remember correctly AE requires 2.0 or later. I'm not sure.

I assume when you mentioned GPU render support this is what you are talking about?

I tried enabling and disabling OpenGl in AE7 but nothing changed. Also, when I apply the Look Suite I dont see an option for "use GPU", just simple parameters for the effect.

For the record, I have been using Look Suite on my old pc, which is about 7 years old with an Intel 810 chip. It's slooooow but MB operates fine with it. Its really strange that my biggin pc is throwing a fit on me. Does changing the standard -or- advanced 3d setting in the composition do anything? Its on advanced by default.

No, the 3D renderer should not have any relevance and neither should AE's OpenGL settings. MB does that all by itself and bypasses AE, hence my original advice to check the global system graphics settings. I'm afraid I can't be more specific - I've been an NVidia Quadro user for years and rarely ever envcountered any issues of that sort....

Thanks for that advice. I will check that out.

Also, you just made my mind up for me about the Nvidia Quadro card. I heard somewhere else that it is a good one.

But that leads me to another question.

When using numerous plugins in AE during rendering, the cpu usage pegs at 100%. My cpu is a Celeron D running somewhere above 3 Ghz. I know its a budget processor but it seems to do very well if I dont push too many effects through AE. But I have a feeling that I will need to put in a better processor.

Would adding more RAM affect the cpu usage or do I need to upgrade my processor to a dual??

Nope, CPU usage and RAM usage are more or less unrelated. CPU usage is merely dependent on the number of threads/ sub-threads/ handles fired by a program and since the Celeron D only handles a limited number of them, it is quite predictable that it will frequently peak an queue requests it cannot process immediately, when e.g. on a Xeon the same operation would barely register. Updating the processor may improve performance, but it mostly depends on the kind of effects you are using. If they are not particularly computationally intensive like several color correction effects, the benefits will be minor. if on the other hand you use a lot of Blurs and Glows for instance, the speedup may be considerable. Regardles of this, having lots of RAM and processing power is never a bad idea ;-)

                          I've a question:

When I'm in my Magic Bullet Look Program i can't find the TOOL-BAR which have to be on the right hand side , normally. There's only the Look-Bar on the left hand side where all the Looks are in.

Usually you have the Tool-bar on the right hand side where you can create the looks.

Are you sure you are running the program at the minimum required screen resolution and it does not simply get cut off? This can happen on notebooks or misconfigured dual screen combos...

yes. I'm really sure that it is running at the right resolution.
                              But thank you Mylenium
