Something else running in background? Whenever I start experiencing weirdness like this, I Save As, and then reboot. Usually fixes it...
Turn off "Preview to External Device" in the Preferences, 3rd party drivers such as AJA's and BlackMagic Design's drivers can cause a slowdown.
The shortcut key for toggling this on and off is Ctrl (or Cmd) - numpad /

I do preview to an external monitor via black magic. but I need to see previews on a pal broadcast monitor as this is the end result.
It's strange how it does it sometimes and not others.
I will try a reset next time and see what happens.
The problem may hinge on pixel aspect ratio conversions. It is reasonable to assume that for previewing on an external monitor additional steps are required, if you are working in a comp whose size is not 100% natively supported by the hardware. The same would in my view apply to using nested comps and mixing ratios and sizes as well as when you use different color modes and color profiles. short of that - the most common reason for slowdowns is still audio usage in a project, so turn it off/ rip out audio files whenever you don't really need them. Even empty audio tracks on captured footage can be troublesome...
Dan, have you seen the latest BlackMagic driver updates? Also, what type of video are you running?
