All you need to know - at least that's what the powers seem to think :-|. I agree that it's not particularly clear, so some better phrasing should definitely be put in place. In the meantime in the hopes of CS5 make sure your voice is heard:

Unfortunately, this line from the docs pretty much means "precompositions are always rasterized as source items." The only option for export is to ignore or rasterize "unsupported" features, and this is currently unsupported.
Yepp, it's a cramp. The powers have been made aware of the situation, so things may look better in CS5.
