Anyone else have these CS4 bugs?

    Level 1
Been using this new version for the past week and noticed 2 bugs and wondered if it was just me:

      1) When auto-save is turned on, if the machine recently "auto-saves" you cannot save your file unless you change something or do a "save as." For example, Say it is 1 AM I've been working on a file since 11 PM and all of my auto saves have been updated at the set increments but if you look at my file, it hasn't been saved since 11:30 and right now the save function is grayed out because the auto save just happened.

      2) Once you send a comp to render, all of your undos are wiped.

      Anyone else?

Both issues are known and will be addressed in a patch release.

Fantastic! Been a long time but you have come to my rescue again Mylenium! Found another thing though this morning. When I hit the render button while I have multiprocessors (render multiple frames) turned on I get a spinning beach ball pause for about 30-40 seconds before it starts rendering. When multiprocessing turned off, it starts rendering right away. Once the first render starts and I stop it and start a fresh duplicate render, the pause goes away.

How many background instances do you use in your MP renders? There are some cases where it will not initiate immediately if you do not use all 8 cores and only use 6 or even less. However, these issues have no clear pattern to them, so they are hard to nail down. In any case, file a report as Todd suggested. Every bit of info helps the devs to get a more complete picture. Specific to your scenario, it would possibly be a good idea to render a clip using the per frame info option for logging. The time info contained in the log may reveal where things slow down.

Thanks. I sent a report via the website outlining these issues. The problem occurs regardless if I'm using 8 or 6 processors. But, like I mentioned before, once the comp is rendered once or I start and stop the render after the "beach ball pause" the pause goes away and only returns once I restart Aftereffects.

Turn on "Show Rendering Progress in Info Panel" under Preferences -> Display and make sure you can see that panel. It will tell you when it is saving the project file and loading it into the other instances of AE.

The 30-40 second delay is awfully long to wait for background renderers to spool up. Hopefully we can make some sense of it when we read your bug report.

Lance, please understand that we all try to do our best, but it's natural that some issues slip. There is no way for anyone to test every workflow and combination of features or how they may wrongly interact with each other. A day has only so many hours and just like posting on this forum to provide help, quite a bit of testing is done by normal users like you and me who still need to work to earn a living. I'd love to do more to get better software, but Adobe doesn't pay my bills, so there you go... And just for consideration: I'm sure even you would prefer that "essentials" get fixed first like that ugly thing when Photoshop installs hosed up your hard drive... Compared to that an incorrect flagging of the file save status, which can be overridden by using "Save As" any time, seems minor.

                            Much respect to Mylenium!

Your excellent posts are kind and respectful. I wish I could always be so even handed and just nice. Thanks for everything you do here.

Let me explain why the SAVE bug is one of the worst I have ever seen in any Mac product.

Here is how I found out about it.

                            1. I opened up a project (a spot for the Dayton Philharmonic) that needed some revision.

                            2, I did my revisions.

                            3. I quit AE (AE did not even ask me to save!!!).

                            4. I opened the project for more revisions without realizing that my earlier revisions were not there.

                            5. Much confusion.

All the above is completely reproducible.

An app that doesn't protect the current state of the document is UNPRECEDENTED in my experience.

To be clear--you can work on an existing document and then quit the APP without getting the CORNERSTONE "Do you want to Save" dialog.

                            I don't consider that minor.

                            Thanks,

                            Lance

I must say, I got caught out today by the same issue. I'm so used to hitting Cmd-S and closing the app that I didn't even look to see if it actually saved. It didn't! Happily, the previous auto-save was good to go.

To further refine my description of this bug:

This bug will apparently only manifest itself if you have AUTOSAVE ON and an AUTOSAVE has occurred. It also does not occur if you make additional changes to the project AFTER the autosave--you have a window of opportunity to get proper behavior but you do stand a great chance of losing work.

                                1. I opened up a project that needed some revision.

                                2, I did my revisions.

                                3. I quit AE (AE did not even ask me to save!!!). Alternatelyy hitting CMD-S to save will have no effect--your document WILL NOT SAVE.

                                4. I opened the project for more revisions without realizing that my earlier revisions were not there.

                                5. Much confusion.

If you are hit by this bug, remember that nothing is lost, it's just saved into the Auto-save project located in a folder next to your project file.

"Remember that nothing is lost, it's just saved into the Auto-save project located in a folder next to your project file"

Actually it very well may be lost as autosave begins to delete saved versions after a certain number of iterations.

The problem is very nasty since you likely (without the knowledge in this thread) open the main project and do some work...not realizing that some of the work you did in the last session may not be saved as part of the main project file.

Austosave will dutifully save this new incomplete version of your project giving you a hodgepodge of differently changed versions and will eventually delete each of those.

Minimizing how bad this bug is probably not wise.

Adobe has admitted their knowledge of the problem and promised a fix (although their top issues on the support site dont' mention it at all, sigh).

It should be pretty easy for Adobe to fix. The problem seems to be that AE now counts an auto-save as a "this file is saved" event, and it shouldn't.

I just lost 5 hours work. Every time I get to a point were I like my work, I save. I HAD Auto Save turned on for every 10 minutes 5 versions max. Crash, I opened the file - it didn't even look like my project ( well, i was just at the very beginning) , then I looked in the auto save folder... there are 2 versions saved 10 minutes apart... 5 hours ago. I'm, I'm speechless...
I don't mind the crash but there is no reason for this - why would a crash change my "working" project file. I should have only lost at most 10 minutes work. And the auto save files - what happened to them?
Yes, I have the 4.0.1 update.

OK, I guess that update ( all 100 plus megs )was primarily for Premiere and or other Adobe apps. Any clue when the AE update is expected?

January or early February would be a good guess. Perhaps even before Christmas... AE is usually close behind Premiere in order to support the additional formats which may have been added in Premiere.

I just did the 9.0.1.51 update, but i'm still having problems with auto-save.

(i know how well it worked in cs3, so i do think it's still a bug?)

I saved a second version of my project, and then there was finally created an auto-saved file. But only one. After some changes/time, no new or updated auto-save-file was made...
