caps-lock on while rendering also prevents Ae updating the CTI while rendering out.
if the graphics card has nothing to update on screen, it hardly will use graphics or system memory. maybe hide the comp window with the render queue window plus minimizing will maybe do a faster job ;)
Ya, I forgot about the Caps Lock thing... I used to use that all the time.
I know that minimizing AE is a solution to some sort of memory issue AE has these days too... Don't recall exactly what it was, though. Some seemingly bogus memory error, I think.
keep in mind that a bad or damaged memory DIMM could also be the cause.
you can use software-tools to check your RAM.
Sounds like a myth, I've never heard of any problems that could be fixed by minimizing AE.
If you can prove the myth is true, please file a bug at

There are indeed some tests around the web where AE renders a little faster when minimizing the app or hover the comp window + "lock the caps"
however, improvements may vary but it's nothing you would sneeze about.
but it helps to have a peace of mind inbetween any Youtube Session or hanging around at Adobe Forums whenever AE does it´s render in the background. :D
