Any effect in the stack can be renamed, just like a layer name - click on the name and press the return key. "Start luminance", for example, sounds like its simply the "Levels" effect renamed.
ah yes. i see what you mean.
start luminence is just like levels and saturation is like tint.
if i select it then press return it just lets me type in a new name, it doesn't revert to its old one. but i can select 'about' and then 'levels' comes up in the description.
so is there any advantage to using levels? i always use curves and i've never tried levels.
It's mostly a matter of preference, I guess. Personally, with a background in television and comfort with waveform monitors, I find Levels is always my first port of call because the histogram lets me quickly "see" and adjust luminance quickly and easily. But if I'm doing individual color-channel adjustment, I'm prone to use Curves first.
I'd suggest whatever gives you the result you want and need is the right tool.
thanks Andrew. much appreciated.
