Third party plugins are not included in the After Effects trial - Cycore, Keylight and Color Finesse.
But they are included in AE 8 (CS3) and are now installed automatically - in previous versions you had to install them separately. If your friend has a version prior to AE 8 (CS3), he/she may not have installed them.
I see, so what happens when I decide to purchase a key from Adobe, how would I be able to get those Cycore plugins if it isn't installed with my own copy.
When you purchase from the Adobe Store, you'll be directed to a full download of the complete package, with plugins included.
Wow, are you this John Gaeta:
In that case: word!
I believe it's a separate installer on the CD that you'll need to run after installing AE.
And if you are *that* John Gaeta (wow!), you might investigate the Cycore FX HD plug-ins. The free versions that come with AE only work in 8-bpc color. The HD versions work in 16-bpc and float. (http://www.cycorefx.com/)

No, as Andrew said, as of CS3 the Cycore plug-ins (and Keylight and Color Finesses) are installed by the same installer that installs the After Effects application. That's one of those little-publicized features of After Effects CS3 that saves all of us a bunch of headache.
Hmm. Jumping on this one late, but with the same issues.
Just downloaded & installed the demo of CS3 whilst waiting for my boxed version to arrive.
Cycore NOT installed by default. At least not with mine. Downloaded & installed the Cycore plugins from their site & they're all running with a green cross through them. (ie In demo mode.)
I haven't yet typed in the serial from the box, which arrived today. I don't suppose I'll be so lucky as to find the plug-ins are fully working once I've done that but we'll see.
Any other suggestions?
Now you have the boxed version, reinstall off disk.
Sorry, forgot to say. They're not ON the disk, contrary to what has been said above.
Or do you mean reinstall the whole app?
Right then. Still slightly confused but here's the updated situation.
When I put in the serial number (plus the serial of an older version) to authorize the demo install, then registered the software on line, it began a secondary install & down came the Cycore filters.
They are NO LONGER a separate install from the disk or the "try" dmg (which are basically identical, as far as I can see).
Unfortunately, the Cycore plug ins are still operating in demo mode. I now have to try & figure out how to fix that!
Once again, any ideas?
The Cycore filters downloaded from
are from a bundle called "CycoreFX HD" which have 16/32-bit versions and come with a few more effects. They tend to collide with the bundled ones installed with AE.
I recommend you uninstall first the CycoreFX HD trial, then deactivate the installed After Effects, uninstall AE, restart your machine, install the bought version of AE. Then run the

Third party plugins (Cycore, Keylight and Color Finesse) are not active in demo mode. I suggest you deactivate your license, uninstall the application and Cycore plugins completely, and then run the installer from the disk again.
You may wish to run the CS3Clean Script before the new installation, particularly if you've had any beta CS3 products installed.
D'oh - Jonas is faster off the keyboard than me! :-)
That's pretty much it, as it goes.
Despite my fumbling around in the dark trying to figure it out, I just spent half an hour on the phone to Cycore in Sweden & the guy gave me the following information:
The free standard edition plug-ins are no longer a separate install, they are part of the main install from the DVD.
(We spent most of that half hour with him directing me to where he thought the plug ins were located on the DVD so that I didn't have to install them separately but they weren't there. D'oh!)
So, basically all this information is contained in the previous posts in this thread, if only I'd read them properly.
That'll teach me.
I'm now un-installing AE CS3 so that I can re-install from the DVD to see if this does indeed solve the problem.
The Cycore guy was also surprised that, following me registering the ugrade on line, a second download began which installed a demo version of the HD Cycore plug ins.
He didn't know anything about that.
I'll report back if this works.
Just to be belt & braces about this, the final procedure (as stated in various posts before this) is:
Uninstall AE CS3 using original installer. (i.e. I had to use the trial installer to uninstall, not the DVD.)
Use the clean script to get rid of everything that the uninstall doesn't. (It recommends that you back up critical data which I did, but everything went fine.)
Re-install from the DVD. Then the Cycore plug-ins etc. are there, as stated previously.
