If the layers are the same dimensions (I think the transforms don't matter, but maybe they do), you can copy/paste the mask shapes onto different layers.
Also, if you want to replace your footage on the timeline with the new footage, you could:
- import the new footage into the project window,
- select it,
- select the old material in the timeline (both need to be selected),
- and then hold alt and drag new footage from the project window onto the timeline layer.

Thanks guys, I was successful with the copy/paste method :)
In AE CS3 you can also use the pickwhip to control one mask from another.
