Not to sound too snobistic, but you still have to tell AE what actually you wanna create and which tools and effects to employ. It's not that AE would take your XML and render a pixel for each pair of data. You have to use solids, masks, effects or text layer to make it show up. Therefore you still have to have a plan how to visualize things as you would if you were to build your diagrams manually. As David said, importing XML is possible and there are methods like .parent and .child to walk the hierarchy, but it's not going to be a quick Saturday afternoon picknick.
Thanks David and Mylenium. I read through the chapter which led to the points Mylenium raised. The amount of data I'm dealing with wouldn't justify the numerous 'picknicks' it would probably take to make it work. I'll explore it though because it sounds interesting. I'll have to read through the rest of the Extend doc to get a better understanding.
