After Effects uses only 14% of 2047 MB of RAM when rendering. Why?

      I have two almost identical G5 4 x 2.5 GHz Macs.
G5 number 1 has 5.5 GB ram, G5 number 2 has 4.5 GB. They both run the standard graphics card NVIDIA GeForce 6600. G51 had an SD Blackmagic video card, G52 has the HD Blackmagic video card. G5 1 has about 30GB free hard space, G52 has about 15GB.
Both are on OSX 10.4.11 running After Effects 6.5.
I am rendering the exact same job from local hard drives, and when doing so, in the render window the "RAM" use gets up to only about 14% of 2047 on G51, and up to about 60% of 2047 on G52.
I also have an old G4 running the same software, it reaches about 60% too, and with the less RAM and the slower processors, it's rendering quicker than the G51.
All After Effects settings have been checked and are the same. Not sure if it's a system thing or a software thing.
Can anybody tell me why this is happening and how to fix it please?
