Maybe they could do something like (but slicker than) the Movie Explorer in Flash. It allows you to search through scripts, copy, images etc. When it shows a piece of copy, it lists the font with it, which lets you quickly resolve font issues. When you find something of interest, you just double-click on it and it takes you straight to that layer, no matter how deeply it's nested in the comp. Maybe the After Effects version could list all effects used the same way.
That would be really helpful to me as well.
>I already know it can't be done
Not natively, yes. However, there is a script somewhere that will report all effects and the layers they are applied to. I also think someone already created a modified version to do exactly whta you need. Perhaps stop by at Aenhancers and it may turn up. Still, I agree, searching a specific effect on a layer is rather painful, even if you have all the plugins...
This function will help a ton of users more than they know. My hope is that everyone reading this post will go over to "Feature Request" page and submit it...
Yes, yes, and again, yes! I would love this feature. I would only add this: I'd like to have find and replace ability as well, and the ability to filter by type of objects and scope (e.g. text layers within selected comps, effects in entire project, expressions on selected layers, etc.). When I get more time I'll try to type up a feature request for this as well.
For the time being, Paul Tuersley has a SearchEffects script:
That's a good and common feature request.
I agree that Paul's script is the best way of accomplishing this for now.
