Make sure your parent layer isn't scaled differently on the X and Y axes. This squishes the layer space in which child layers live, and results in skewing during rotation on the XY plane (the same principle applies to any axis pair, of course, but Z-rotation would implicate the XY plane).
I don't know if the fact that the NULL object was scaled had anything to do with this, but I ended up relegating each 3D object to its own composition, and then parented those to the NULL object, which worked.
Probably the long way around, but next time I'll know to look for any scaling issue before I start :|
Has the continuous raster button been activated for the nested comp? This can cause some surprises if there is a camera in the upstream comp because you will see the camera output instead of the comp';s relative 3d positioning.
