    After FX preferences Help!

Hi everyone. I swear, Im so mad right now I could spit, so Ill try not to get too vicious :-) So quite simply, every now and then, after effects freezes. After I do a force quite, randomly, but seemingly once every other month, after I restart, EVERYTHING that is custom is gone. All my export templates, all my preferences, scratch disks, even all my saved window positionings - ALL gone. And of course, as you can guess, right at the worst possible time (is there ever a good time to re-do this?)

So the question being, where is the preferences file fro adobe on a PC? I would really like to find that sucker (once I re-do everything again) and make a duplicate for the next time After FX takes a giant dump on my screen :-)

Thanks for any help guys and gals...

I don't know nuthin' 'bout no PeeCees but, if this were a Macintosh, what I'd suggest is once you find the prefs file, you want to duplicate it and keep the copy in a safe place. That way you can drag it back any time it gets corrupted.

Hoe you get better advice from a Windows user soon. But you need to try to figure out why it's crashing. Not saying never get AE crashes on my Mac (had one just this morning) but I can usually figure it out on my own (huge precomps, had to figure out how to purge all of the caches but neded up pre-rendering the huge comps).

first, make sure you can see hidden and system files

            c:\docsandsettings\username\appdata\adobe\ae\prefs - or around there.

              b After Effects CS3:
              i C:\Documents and Settings\YOUR_USERNAME\Application Data\Adobe\After Effects\8.0\Adobe After Effects 8.0 Prefs.txt

              b After Effects 7.0:
              i C:\Documents and Settings\YOUR_USERNAME\Application Data\Adobe\After Effects\7.0\Adobe After Effects 7.0 Prefs.txt

Are you sure it is crashing? Auto-save can end up looking like a crash if you have a complex project and you are saving it to a slow disk /network drive.

Fellas: great! Im so used to macs, I keep forgetting that PC's have that one folder that has all the pref stuff.

Jonas, yeah, Im 100% positive. I check the sequencer and see that its really dead before I invoke the dreaded ctrl alt delete.

Fellas: One last question, are the output module templates stored somewhere else? I cannot find those prefs, although its not nearly as large a hassle as the window placements. Thanks again!

On a crazier note, has any other PC users experienced this? When I think of it, I really thought once I found the folder, all my stuff would be there and I would merely have to relink it...but its empty. That tells me AE actually, erased everything there. Is it me or is that just nucking futz?

I have never, ever heard of AE deleting the entire contents of its own preference folder, so probably you have something that is affecting your system like a virus, trojan or spyware. Like David said, make sure you have enabled the "Show hidden files and folders" in Explorer's view options.

The Output modules are store in the same folder, but they are not in human-reaadbale form, but you can copy the file and store it in a saqfe place (or export it from within the Template window inside AE.)

Well...you cant say that you've never heard of AE deleting the contents of its preference folder...cuz you just did! :-) LOL.

But seriously, I doubt it would be trojan or a virus, since nothing is corrupted, its just gone. And I find the scenario of an AE specific virus/trojan improbable. Whats more reasonable, an AE specific trojan that destroys just your prefs folder...or that AE on a PC sucks?

I rest my case :-) Thanks for all the help guys!

"or that AE on a PC sucks?"

Well, that's not the case... Far from it. Perhaps it's Door #3 - something user related....

I've earned my living for the last five years with AE on a PC, so I have to disagree with you, Albertolin.

Here's a bunch of things to try:
