What do you mean by "animate panel"? All text parameters that are animatable with text are listed under the respective sections of the text layer in the timeline - after you have added them to your text via the mini-arrow menu under the "Text" parent property. In its default state, text has no text animators attached to it. The text panel itself is only for setting up the base text and does not relate to the animation features. changes in there will only be reflected by setting source text keyframes, but since they aleways are hold keyframes, this is of course of limited use. I recommend you play with the text animation presets that come with AE to gain a understanding of how text animators work and how they relate to the base layout you setup with the text panel.

Are your switches and modes columns hidden in the timeline panel by chance? Pressing F4 will toggle them.

Ah, I see. In that case toggle the modes as Aaron suggested. if it still does not show up, then you may have a problem with your graphics card configuration, which is a whole 'nother matter...
