If you can convert it to a vector path you have more options avail
You use also use the paint tool. I know Creative Cow has at least one
tutorial on using the paint tool in this manner. Often it gets used to
create a text 'handwriting' effect.
As Raymond said, check out a few tutorials. In particular go looking for Jayse Hansen's "Growing Vines" tute. You can also get several hints and clues from some of the 3DStroke related training clips on the Trapcode website. With variations, they can be used with the normal Stroke and Write-On effects as well.

3d Stroke is a very useful tool from Trapcode. It automates a number of
effects you can do with lines. (I'm not sure, perhaps the proper term is
to say 'vector shape', but in the end, its lines and stuff made from
lines). With 3d Stroke you can animate the reveal, duplicate them,
rotate them in Z space and more.
