This matter has been discussed a dozen times and from compatibility issues with Windows Vista to merely damaged preferences there's an infinite number of combinations that may cause the misbehavior. Please do a search on the forum first. That aside, getting good help requires qualified questions in the first place - things like "My car doesn't run!" are not going to get anywhere. The car's battery could be empty, it could have no gas, it could be damaged, if you get my meaning. Conversely, you need to provide more info about your computer and any related stuff that may potentially affect AE.

I wouldn't go that far, but I agree that there are forums out there that are more comfortable to use. ;-) Anyway, to the matter at hand: I would try to disable visual effects in Vista first. Even if it sounds brutal, using the classical Windows design might be a good starting point. The compatibility modes should not have any effect, so you can go without them. Another thing to definitely try is to delete the prefs (Users/Dylan/AppData/Adobe/After Effects/8.0/After Effects CS3 Prefs.txt, if I'm not mistaken (not on my Vista machine at the moment)). I would also, before attempting to import anything, clean out the media cache. You can do so via the Prefs or simply delete the folder in your User directory. It's possible, some remnants of older files are floating about and mess up things or the folder is extremely full. If the tips provided don't help, check back here.

                        Dylan,

How far did you get in my list of tips?
                        i http://generalspecialist.com/2007/02/troubleshooting-after-effects-7.asp

I'd bet you have a bunch of 3rd party codec packs installed. They are infamous for causing problems.

Jonas Hummelstrand, on that site i really dont see anything that has to do with importing problems.

Almost every tip on that list deals with problems that can affect importing. I'd start by uninstalling all 3rd party codec packs.

what do you mean by 3rd party codec packs?

K-Lite, FF Codec Pack and that kind of nonsense.

                                  Dylan,

All of us here are trying to help you for free, out of the goodness of our hearts, so it's frustrating to realize that you don't follow the advice you are given.

In the post I've linked to twice, there's instructions on how to do this, easily found if you search the web page for "codec."
