The only way to support that camera without having to convert to DNG first
is to upgrade to CS3. Adobe doesn't release updates for anything other than
the most current version of Photoshop.
As for why Canon does not support DNG in-camera, it is discussed in the comments of John Nack blog post about DNG being submitted to ISO: http://blogs.adobe.com/jnack/2008/05/dng_submitted_t.html
But Chuck Westfall from Canon USA expressed interest about the DNG format: http://www.barrypearson.co.uk/articles/dng/speculate.htm
I know you have probably read this many times before. But ACR in Photoshop CS3 is vastly improved. There are numerous new controls that provide you with much greater flexibility with your raw images. Unless there are other factors preventing you from upgrading, it is my opinion that you would find the upgrade well worth the investment.
