Books On DVD Audio - Final Use Encore - /Recs?

    Bill Hunt CommunityMVP
I'm looking for recommendations on good books that take DVD Audio a bit beyond what I have in my library. The end use will be in Encore for authoring, but most of the Audio work will probably be in Audition, Premiere Pro and any other necessary apps. Any chapters heavy in Dolby Surround & DTS, plus any of the other "theater" encoding schemes would be greatly appreciated.

I've got "Focal Easy Guide Encore2"(Jeff Bellune), and, while it's good, want to go beyond the pure Encore info that it contains. I've also got "CiaB for Encore," which is light on Audio, "CiaB for Audition," which spends most time on pro-sound w/ heavy emphasis on recording and I want more towards AV/DVD sound/music, and "Focal Easy Guide Audition," which is more toward pro-sound recording, like "CiaB Audition."

Anyone (Neil Wilkes, your name comes to my mind) have any suggestions for worthwhile purchases? I'll first be doing a full read of the book(s), but plan on keeping it/them handy as a reference. I have a lot of great sites' pages bookmarked, but am looking more for printed materials, so I can easily check the index and find answers quickly. Guess a possibility would be to Ctrl-c/Ctrl-v all of the various articles, create a PDF and then print it, but there must be something out there. All my Google & Amazon hits come up with what I already own.

Thanks for any ideas/recs. I also know that this is not pure Encore stuff, but that is where it will all end up.

          Bill.

Sorry to have taken so long getting back here - I have been under the old cosh lately, and have been away & hard at it.
          Excuses over.
How far do you want to go? I'm assuming 5.1 is a must-have here with the DTS references, and have a great PDF link for you:
          http://www.grammy.com/PDFs/Recording_Academy/Producers_And_Engineers/5_1_Rec.pdf
This is almost a 5.1 "bible" of Do's and Don'ts, and is a constant reference for me (I printed this out).

There is also a great book called "5.1 Surround Sound Up & Running" by Tomlinson Holman - again an invaluable reference.

If you can let me know what sort of material you're looking for, I will have a trawl through my library for reference material. One that does come immediately to mind is by Jay Rose - he has a couple out now, and they are very good indeed dealing with sound specifically for film/TV etc, and how to get the best from field recorders, actual mix techniques, dialogue editing, Post Production etc. Very useful.
See http://www.dplay.com for this & others.

http://www.digido.com will get you to the site of probably the finest Mastering Engineer alive - Bob Katz.
Specifically, his book "Mastering Audio" which is about all aspects, not just what is now called "mastering". This book really is a "must-buy" for all serious Audio Engineers, and will repay the investment very quickly indeed.

(maybe we should start a thread (or move this one) to the Lounge, as it will deal with several Adobe applications?)

            Neil,

Thank you for the response. As I've been in the air, more than on the ground, since I posted, there is no problem, whatsoever.

Just downloaded the PDF and ordered the first two books, so that will be a good next step. So far, most of what I have learned has come from you and from Jeff Bellune, both his Encore book, and this forum.

I do agree that this probably should have been started in the Lounge, and now wish that I had done so. Maybe the MODs can move it there, as you're correct, it really does cover work in several Adobe apps, with Encore only being the final one.

Right now, I'm just looking to go beyond the manual, the forum and Jeff's Encore2 book. You have given me that start.

NOTE to MODs, Neil is correct, that this thread should be moved to the Lounge, if possible.

            Thanks,
            Hunt

              Jeff,

Thanks. Until this moved to the DVD Authoring Lounge, I did not even know that this "lounge" existed. I had not seen it before, only the Premiere Lounge.

Now I have more Encore reading to do, to get rid of all of these little "red flags." Just when I thought I'd seen it all!

Books arrived. Thanks to all for the titles. I have my Summer "reading list" ahead of me. Since I'm flying for 3 of the next 4 months, I know what will fill my briefcase... I guess that my AE books will have to wait, until Autumn.
