1. Re: DVD does not play
Ruud Blauw Nov 28, 2008 4:27 PM (in response to Soula-55)Is there more than 1GB of data on the DVD-R? If not it may be that your Panasonic player is getting lost in the empty space on the disc during a calibration routine. A workaround would be to add some "dummy data" via the DVD-ROM Content option on the Disc tab to fill the DVD to at least 1GB. -

3. Re: DVD does not play
Ruud Blauw Nov 28, 2008 4:38 PM (in response to Soula-55)Have you successfully played the same type and brand of DVD on the Panasonic player before? If so, can you think of anything that is different with this disc? (E.g. made with different authoring app, or ...) -
4. Re: DVD does not play
Soula-55 Nov 28, 2008 4:46 PM (in response to Soula-55)Yes I have successfully played the same type and brand of DVD on this Panasonic player. I made a simpler DVD (no menus) which I exported directly from Premiere CS3. -

6. Re: DVD does not play
Ruud Blauw Nov 29, 2008 5:15 AM (in response to Soula-55)Was the DVD burned directly from Encore or did you use a 3rd party app to burn from a DVD Folder? -
7. Re: DVD does not play
Soula-55 Nov 29, 2008 6:08 AM (in response to Soula-55)Directly from Encore, and I checked for firmware updates also, just in case
From Encore I selected Format:Disc and Output: DVD disc, all else I left at default -
8. Re: DVD does not play
Stan Jones Nov 29, 2008 6:59 AM (in response to Soula-55)Have you tried it on another standalone? It might help if you narrow this down to whether it is the Panasonic player or any standalone. I use four different DVD players to test disks. Not playing on any of the 4 is a different problem from playing on all but my son's portable DVD player that will reveal a problem disk quicker than the others.
I don't think it matters here, but "defaults" may not really mean that we know what you used or that they are guaranteed to work. For best troubleshooting, list more of the specs.
What transcoding settings did you use when you burned the successful disk from PPro? Were there any other differences? You might try another version from Encore transcoding at CBR 7. Or use a simpler menu from Encore.
Generally, I think the recommendation is to use rewritable disks for troubleshooting, and I think most of us create a DVD folder or image from Encore and then burn to a disk from outside Encore. Imgburn is popular.
I have no idea why you are having a problem, but I hear your pain. -
9. Re: DVD does not play
Soula-55 Nov 29, 2008 7:31 AM (in response to Soula-55)Thanks Stanley, I appreciate your input. Unfortunately at this time I don`t have many standalone players.... I was so sure, it never occurred to me to use rewritables..... I will try another transcoding preset though, and see what happens.
I just made an image and burned it with Nero 7 premium. This one is OK, it plays well. But, in all honesty, I should be able to burn DVD disks using Encore, after all it is a dedicated software....
Anyway, I have an NTSC project, burned on a DVD disc (4.7 GB, single layer) My transcode settings were: NTSC DV High quality 4Mb VBR 2 pass, all regions and no restrictions
Is there anything else that I should have done which escaped me??
I would like the best possible output on TV
I have never used Imgburn, do you think that I will have better results if I use it instead of Nero?
Thanks again -

Stan Jones Nov 29, 2008 11:07 AM (in response to Soula-55)Read this thread. It gives some additional info that may help you and some of the pros and cons of imgburn vs nero. I have been very happy with imgburn since I started using it.

11. Re: DVD does not play
Soula-55 Nov 29, 2008 11:19 AM (in response to Soula-55)...reporting back....
...just to keep the record straight...
After trying all combinations, and having burned a few DVDs, I decided to make a last effort using Encore for burning. I just could not accept the idea that I will HAVE TO use a third party software to burn a simple DVD.
So, I re-burned the same project keeping the same presets, exactly as before, but using a SONY re-writable disk. Well, what do you know, the miracle has happened, lo and behold, this one plays perfectly well!!!
Although I can`t explain it, this is one step forward.... -

14. Re: DVD does not play
Bill Hunt Nov 29, 2008 2:56 PM (in response to Soula-55)It appears that RiteK once made respected media. However, in the last several months, I've seen a lot of folk having problems with them. I've never used Ritek, so have not personal reference.
For consistantly great results, it seems that Tayio Yuden and Verbatim are the top two manufacturers.
I just finished off my first 1000 TY's (DVD-5) and have not had one failure, or return. I've had the same results, with far fewer samples, with Verbatim DVD-9's. So far, 100% perfect. All burned at the minimum speed on either a Plextor, or LG burner.

Soula-55 Nov 29, 2008 3:25 PM (in response to Soula-55)Thanks Bill, buying those DVDs was a mistake, I lost a lot of time, but I see this as an experience.... at least my burners are OK!!!!! -
16. Re: DVD does not play
Ruud Blauw Nov 29, 2008 3:32 PM (in response to Soula-55)What Bill said. :) The user reports on VideoHelp.com for RITEKF1 are in line with his observations.- Use a
maximum bit rate of no more than 7Mb/s.
- Let Encore convert the audio to Dolby Digital (AC3).
- Use good quality DVD-R media, e.g. Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden.
- Keep your burner's firmware up-to-date.
- Burn at the lowest speed your burner allows. (With modern burners that is usually 4x.)
- Never ever use adhesive labels on your discs.
- Use a
maximum bit rate of no more than 7Mb/s.
