    Codec Troubleshooting Issue

    Stan Jones CommunityMVP
I posted this message in the Creative Suite/Windows forum, where I think it is best placed. I was searching for a solution to the Encore PGC error, so am posting this note.

      Here is the link.

Basically, CS3 codecs ("Mainconcept (Adobe2) ...") are entered in the Windows registry with double quotes around the values for the "Friendly Name" and file name. This produces a false "broken" report from the Sherlock codec utility. As far as I know, this does not create any functional problem with the codecs.

I found no references to this on these forums or the adobe support searches, and only one reference elsewhere, so I entered a bug report. Is this a known issue?

SOunds like a problem with the Sherlock utility to me.
If it caused a functionality issue, then it would be an Adobe bug - but as it doesn't.......

I agree. And it suggests using a different utility instead of Sherlock. In the following thread, adobe support apparently pointed a user to a free utility that not only lists codecs but will remove and register them:

This is the link to the "DirectShow Filter Utility."

But, as illustrated by that thread, using the "extra" quote marks for these few codecs has led to confusion for users.

Interesting, as I have used Sherlock on both my workstation and laptop, and never got the "broken" message. Guess I've been lucky. I appreciate the links, as I often recommend Sherlock, when folk have CODEC problems, and I may have been doing them a disservice.

              Thanks,

Have you run Sherlock since moving to CS3? I believe the "problem" did not exist in earlier versions, but I had a PPro2 only installation to test. I suspect it is an installer oddity, and perhaps other install methods may get different results. I did a fresh CS3 install, and I wonder if an upgrade may differ.
