    Removing Airplane or Truck Noise

I searched this forum, but couldn't find an answer. What's the best way to remove an airplane or truck engine noise that runs through the dialogue?

          Hi Lionel,

Soundbooth has a few tools that can help removing unwanted noise. Trucks and Airplanes can be tricky as they tend to be loud and cover a wide frequency range.

Open the Tasks panel and click the "Clean Up Audio" task. I would first suggest using the Rumble... filter to remove the low-frequency sounds that are common with trucks and vehicles. Then, you can tackle the noise that overlaps the dialog.

You can try capturing a Noise Print by locating a section of audio that contains just the noise you are trying to remove, with no dialog. Highlight this selection and click the "Capture Noise Print" button. Next, make a selection that spans the entire region where the offending noise occurs and click the "Noise..." task button. Here you can tweak a few settings and preview the resulting noise reduction.

Keep in mind that these sounds change as they move past, so the noise reduction may vary in its quality depending on the characteristics of the Noise at a given point in time. You may want to try unchecking the "Use Captured Noise Print" option and see if the generic but adaptive algorithm does a better job.

Lastly, if the frequency range of the noise doesn't directly interfere with the dialog but simply exists at the same time, you can try manually removing it. In the Tasks panel, click the "Remove a Sound" task, which will open up the Spectral Frequency editing view. Change your Resolution setting to 2048 or 4096 and you may be able to visually see the noise in areas outside of the dialog frequency range. You can use the lasso or marquee tools to select the noise, then use the on-screen gain adjustment to reduce the volume of the offending noise without affecting the other, unselected frequencies.

          Good luck!
