    layer positioning

    Vic_C
I have created a webpage using tables and layers.
In my Dreamweaver layout, the layers appear to be positioned incorrectly but when I preview the page in different browsers the layer positioning is fine. Is this normal?
Also, the layers appear in the correct position in Safari, Netscape and Camino but not in Internet Explorer. How can I overcome this?

          'layers' are absolutely positioned divs.

Your tables are likely not absolutely positioned.

As such, as you change your browser size, the tables and layers will likely
          become misaligned.

And, to add, this is not because of anything to do with the layers. It's
because the tables are moving to a new center point, or flexing to fill the
            page.

So how can I overcome this problem - how do I make the tables absolutely positioned?
              • 4. Re: layer positioning
                Level 7
                You could use CSS -

                table { position:absolute; }

But I'm curious how you came up with that notion. The idea is to ELIMINATE
absolute positioning from your layout methods, not reinforce it!
Furthermore, this method will not relieve the terrible problem you will have
                with text in layers.

The real bottom line for you is that you simply cannot build a web page by
taking a design from PS or FW, making it the background of the
page/table/div, and superimposing your text on it.

If I'm honest, one of the reasons I added the layers was because of an afterthought with regards to the design - lazy, I know! The majority of the page was done using tables. I shall go back to the beginning and add the elements through tables.

Another reason I added the layers, however, was to make the text wrap around an image. Is there a better way to do this than layers?

Layers are never a good way to do anything with text. Period.

Without seeing your page, I really can't address any 'better way' methods.
                    Can you post a link?

Not at the moment, no, and it's telling me the code is exceeding the allowed size so I can't send you that either. Oh well, I'll have a go through trial and error. Thanks for your help though.

Do you have any web space where you can upload this?

I do but the guy who would usually do this for me is away until next week (I'm newish to Dreamweaver and haven't got to uploading yet).
