Not sure about why flex is behaving different in ff and ie. You can fix this problem by modifying the height in your HTML wrpper file.
As to the data grid, you can bind chindnumber to its rowcount to fit the size
run, ryan! I've modified my HTML to allow 100% height but it still doesn't work in firefox. Safari and IE both display at 100% height, just not firefox. I don't know what you mean by "bind chindnumber to its rowcount". I've added rowCount="4" to the <mx:datagrid tag but that didn't help.
From further investigation the issue seems to be that the MySQL field I'm trying to display in the datagrid is a LONGTEXT type and that is causing all the extra blank lines to be displayed in the datagrid. The same code displays the datagrid correctly with all the other fields from my db which doesn't have a LONGTEXT or MEDIUMTEXT field.
Perhaps I'm not getting the data back from the MySQL database correctly. Do you know ofgood tutorials on getting data from a MySQL db and displaying the results in a flex datagrid using php?
Thanks in advance...

height in HTML wrapper is 100% by default, you have to specify explite height for ff, try height=500 or bigger number(it work in my case)
data binding is like a listener to variable and interact with it's changing. but if its extra space or blank lines, just TRIM your string
Not sure what the problem was but it seems to have fixed itself now.
