If you cannot use AIR, thre are still a few solutions.
Easiest is to put data on the clipboard and paste it into Excel. You can build a comma delimited string (CSV) which is simple to code, or you can build a string defining html table. That give you some control over the formating you will see in excel. I have an example of this on www.cflex.com, but this is simple enough to do from scratch.
Alternatively, you could save a CSV file to the server, and if the page headers are set up properly, when you access it from a browser, the browser will open it with excel.

It is possible to save in XLS and then open in Excel
which is using AS3XLS library.
However, I don't think it will work if you try to save as Excel 2007 (XLSX file).
That is what I need. :-(
Probably need to use Apache POI framework & Java to do that.
