    Background color in layer

    Conlyn
I'm a very basic Dreamweaver user. (Version 2004MX 7.0.1). I am familiar with HTML but cannot figure out why the background color does not appear for the length of the entire layer box in either Firefox or Internet Explorer. It appears correctly in the Design View. To see what I am talking about go to: http://www.emmanuelvb.com/outreach.htm

Also if you can tell me why screens appear differently in Firefox than IE I'd appreciate it. I have to make my layers much taller for Firefox because the text disappears if I don't. Thanks

This page will explain to you alot about why your screens appear differently
in FF and any other browser....

          http://validator.w3.org/check?verbose=1&uri=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.emmanuelvb.com%2Foutreach.htm

If your page doesn't validate, it'll be all over the place in all browsers.

That not correct. There is no correlation between validation or if a
page renders correctly in a browser. Stop giving misleading answers.

I know you're big on validation, thats ok but to make a sweeping
statement like that is totally inaccurate.

You know as well as I do that even if a page does validate it does not
mean that it will appear correctly in a browser.

Its true that if your code is of a high standard that it is more likely
that you will have less issues but whether a pages appears correctly or
not in a browser has nothing to do with validation at all.

Thats a browser manufauture issue. I would treat validation more
            seriously IF browsers did.

The simple answer is you have declared a height on that layer of 216px
and that's exactly what the browser sets it as. The text inside it will
              just flow out of it.

Remove the height from the layer and you'll find it will stretch along
              with the text.

No validator would have sorted that out because technically height is
allowed but should rarely be used unless you know what you're doing.

Thanks! Removing the height was the obvious answer. I do a lot of "renaming" pages when I create a new page and never thought to check the height because it shows correctly in design view. Such a simple answer! Duh!!
