1. Re: Template is nested inside itself?
MurraySummers Apr 15, 2009 12:32 PM (in response to TMF89)Any ideas? Thanks guys.
Definitely. This is diagnostic for something being wrong. You can bank on it. I'd love to say more, but without a look at your template, I cannot. Is it possible for you to upload it somewhere and post a link to it?

2. Re: Template is nested inside itself?
TMF89 Apr 15, 2009 1:15 PM (in response to MurraySummers)Well I work in the web office at my university designing the site, so I can't upload the exact page without getting a lot of heat from my boss for it. I can send you the code/file though, or give you a link to the site?

3. Re: Template is nested inside itself?
MurraySummers Apr 15, 2009 1:21 PM (in response to TMF89)Can you paste the code for the template into a reply? If it's too voluminous, you can edit out the wordy parts....

Good first try. Already I can see that this is not the code from a DW Template - it's from a Template child page. Can you show me the code from the Template, please? And what I'm looking for can be seen by just pasting the code from <html> to </head>.

MurraySummers Apr 15, 2009 1:53 PM (in response to TMF89)How's that?
Gets the job done. This code is not from a DW Template file, as I mentioned earlier. What is this file's filename? Does it end with *.dwt and is it in the Templates folder?
How do I know it's not from a Template? This tells me -
<html><!-- InstanceBegin template="/Templates/main.dwt"
If this were a Template file, that Template markup would not be there.

8. Re: Template is nested inside itself?
TMF89 Apr 15, 2009 2:01 PM (in response to MurraySummers)Yes to both, it's titled main.dwt, and in a folder along with a few other templates for various parts of the site. However I can't apply any of those templates to other pages either.
And just to clarify, by template makeup, you mean the template= part right?

Yes, that's what I mean. Somehow, you saved a child page over the Template. Look at your other Template pages, and tell me if they also have that <!-- InstanceBegin template="..." --> markup in them, if so, then there is trouble in River City....

10. Re: Template is nested inside itself?
TMF89 Apr 16, 2009 11:30 AM (in response to MurraySummers)Most of them do, a couple don't. Most of the ones that do have the same "template=main.dwt" message, but one or two others have the template equalling a different template.
Note: I was handed this site, and had nothing to do with its creation of design, so I know about as much as you do, besides the fact that I can actually see the templates, and as far as I know, the person(s) who created the site are long gone, so I'm not going to be able to go to the creator for help. Not trying to give any attitude, just letting you know the situation.

Yes - it means let's take the discussion off of the public forum temporarily.

16. Re: Template is nested inside itself?
MurraySummers Apr 17, 2009 8:11 AM (in response to MurraySummers)Failing independent contact, here's some information for you on how to RECREATE YOUR TEMPLATES, which is what you will need to do for all of the Templates that have that markup at the top. It would be MUCH safer to verify the state of your site, which is what I was going to ask you about - but please make a backup of the site before beginnning this operation anyhow.
So -
1. Backup your site.
2. Close all open files.
3. Open one of your Templates that contains this spurious markup.
4. Make note of this Template's filename (I will refer to it below as "<whatever>.dwt")
Find -
<!-- InstanceBegin template="/Templates/template.dwt"
codeOutsideHTMLIsLocked="false" -->
Replace -
with nothing
i.e., delete it.
Find -
<!-- InstanceEnd -->
Replace -
with nothing
i.e., delete it
Find -
<!-- Instance
Replace -
<!-- Template
You now have a template file. Save it as <whatever>.dwt' in the Templates folder.
Now you can open it and edit out the contents in the editable regions before
saving it again.
Repeat this for each of your munged Template files.
