acresofgreen Apr 18, 2009 5:31 AM (in response to Bryan Elwood)Hi, I don't know if there is a plug-in which will minimize manual work, but I recently came across this tutorial which I liked: http://www.myinkblog.com/2008/08/10/design-with-swirls-and-flourishes/

Not at all. They are by no means "fractal" in the mathematical sense, but consider, that any simple item cloned and transformed in caleidoscopic manners will give that impression. It's still just a multifold iterative transform, though. As for the rest - you can buy such stuff by the bucket on sites like You work for them and others and surely there's an abundance of tutorials. Just a few weeks ago John Nack plugged one by Veerle on his blog.... The rest is just a matter of finding the right combinations of shape strokes and the aforementioned cloning and transforming. If you wanted to do this parametrically, you'd probably have to use Processing and program your own L-systems, attractors, iterator clouds etc and output it as vectors. some of that might also exist as scripts and plug-ins, but you shouldn't hope to find anything with a "make art" button.

John Danek Apr 18, 2009 9:31 AM (in response to Bryan Elwood)There's a great clip art source from Aridi that come in series of CD packages of different elements from different periods. I've used them in the past where I stole pieces as used them as symbols, and could conceivably see them used in the symbols sprayer. You can also combine them with your own artwork, copy-and-paste, etc., to get different effects. I often wonder about those scrolls and flourishes, very nice work.

They still do it at www.alfredom.com using Illustrator.
