1. Re: Importing excel tables into InDesign and retaining the formulas
Buko. Apr 20, 2009 11:40 AM (in response to Talyianna)I'm pretty sure ID can't do that.
I'll get corrected if I'm wrong.

2. Re: Importing excel tables into InDesign and retaining the formulas
Talyianna Apr 20, 2009 12:55 PM (in response to Buko.)I came across a plugin called TableStyles and CellStyles by Teacup Software.
I just saw it mentioned in some other threads here...an example of one of them is at: http://forums.adobe.com/message/1324392#1324392

P Spier Apr 20, 2009 1:00 PM (in response to Talyianna)Table and cell styles have been a native feature if InDesign since CS3, but they won't solve the formula problem. ID doesn't do math in table cells.

4. Re: Importing excel tables into InDesign and retaining the formulas
[Jongware] Apr 20, 2009 1:01 PM (in response to Talyianna)InDesign can't read and/or parse Excel formulas. Excel puts the formula into a cell and appends its latest result, and that's read by InDesign as plain text. It's rather the other way around: to get a 'formula' into ID, you have to format it as plain text in Excel (again, you see this in ID as plain text).
Nothing to worry about: Excel is extremely bad in formatting text; ID, on the other hand, excels in this.
Table Styles have absolutely nothing to do with this. They are for formatting tables, not for calculations. By the way, these Table Styles are integrated into ID since version CS2 -- latest is CS4.

5. Re: Importing excel tables into InDesign and retaining the formulas
Talyianna Apr 20, 2009 1:09 PM (in response to [Jongware])Okay, for some reason I thought that there was a plugin that could do this (TableStyles & CellStyles by Teacup software) but I must have been mistaken. Thanks a lot for your help:)

P Spier Apr 20, 2009 1:15 PM (in response to Talyianna)Adobe licensed the plugin from Teacup.

8. Re: Importing excel tables into InDesign and retaining the formulas
Talyianna Jun 27, 2009 10:09 AM (in response to P Spier)Is there a way to get these formulas into a PDF (once I export the ID file as a PDF) ?
Thank you,
Christine

Buko. Jun 27, 2009 10:44 AM (in response to Talyianna)Acrobat does not do math either.

BobLevine Jun 27, 2009 10:47 AM (in response to Buko.)Not entirely true. You can enter equations into form fields.

Talyianna Jun 27, 2009 10:59 AM (in response to BobLevine)Yes, I came across this post just a few moments ago, about entering formulas into PDF documents. It looks VERY complicated though!

12. Re: Importing excel tables into InDesign and retaining the formulas
Steve Werner Jun 28, 2009 7:02 AM (in response to Talyianna)The problem is stated in your first sentence: The formulas were done in Excel. They'll have to be edited there. No other application (especially InDesign) would be able to edit them.

13. Re: Importing excel tables into InDesign and retaining the formulas
Talyianna Jun 28, 2009 9:54 AM (in response to Steve Werner)So, can I not use the formulas that were created in Excel and just transfer them over into the pdf fields somehow?

14. Re: Importing excel tables into InDesign and retaining the formulas
Steve Werner Jun 28, 2009 7:08 PM (in response to Talyianna)That's what I'm trying to tell you: It won't work. While Acrobat lets forms do calculations, you'll have to become a JavaScript expert. You can just "import them."
