"animate in background" setting slows foreground app performance

I have a Director project on the Mac with Flash (AS2) embedded.  If I turn on "animate in background" when publishing the projector, then foreground applications seem to run fine. (ie launch Acrobat Reader). However, if I deactivate "animate in the background", then the foreground applications seem to run very slowly to the point of almost being unusable. This occurs with Acrobat in particular.

I would like to turn off "animate in the background" so as not to confuse the user when the embedded Flash menus still drop down but they are not clickable the first time since the projector is not the front application.

What is going on? Any suggestions for getting around this?
