    Fireworks sub menu problem

    hedgehoppers

Hi. I completed your tutorial and generated a good drop down menu with sub menus. When i preview this in Fireworks it works and looks good. When i put this on my WEB site in Dreamweaver it works well but the little arrows that show the sub menu appear as little red crosses. What have i done wrong please .

      Thanks

If there's a little red cross where the image should be it's because the link to the image is wrong......

Before going any further with the use of these menus, you may want to have a read of these couple of articles:  those dropdowns are not really recommended these days  :-)

Thank you. How can the link to the image be wrong please? Do I have to

            upload another file ?

Actually, the link may be wrong, but I should have also said, that the image may not be where the page is expecting to find it.

It woul be better if you could upload all the relevant files to a server space and provide a link to the problem page...

I have looked in to my problem a bit further. It appears that Fireworks is

exporting the files ok. In my case it has generated files Pop.htm,

                  Pop.png. Pop_r1_c1_gif, Pop_r1_c2_gif Pop_r1_c3_gif Pop_r1_c4_gif. I have

                  named the file pop.

These are all in the Dreamweaver directories locally and remotely (on the

                  WEB site)

Still the small indents arrows do not appear on the WEB site, red crosses

appear were they should be. All the other areas of the pop down menu work

great on the WEB site. Take a look if you like www.hedgehoppers.co.uk.

                  Still need some help please?

                  Thanks

I just visited the page you linked above and I don't see any dropdown menu system using either Firefox or IE7.  Looking at the code, there is nothing there to indicate that a FWs dropdown menu is on the page  ??

PS:  This is a personal opinion and not meant to be unkind, but those marquees with the scrolling text, and the flying plane are oh so early 1990s  :-)

It addition to being rather annoying - it is quite distracting and takes the viewers' eyes away from the main content of the page...(I have a bad headache, and all that movement on the page only made it worse)... maybe something to think about for your future visitors......

                      Hi

Enter the site clicking on the rotating Yellow box. This will take you to

the main first page were the pop down menu is

I actually did click on that yellow box, followed through to the next page, but still didn't see any dropdowns...  wow - talk about mystery meat navigation...

it's only because I saw the code and saw that there *should* be a dropdown, that I started mousing all over the page until I ended up mousing over "Site contents" and the dropdown worked... I'm afraid you really should make that text link be more obvious that you are supposed to do something with it.

Anyway, if I try and find that arrow image - which is listed in the code as being part of the secondary flyout - directly in the browser, by typing into the address bar:

                        http://www.hedgehoppers.co.uk/hmfcimages/arrows.gif

I get:  File not Found:  The requested URL was not found on this server.

This means that the arrow image hasn't been uploaded to the server, that's why the you get the red cross - it shows a missing image, just as I mentioned in my first reply  :-)

Are you sure you've uploaded it and that it is located in the hmfcimages folder?

Also the menu is completely broken in Firefox.  I attach an image just to show you.  If you original mouseover the Contents link, the menu will dropdown, but you mouseout, and then mouseover close to the top header image, There is a capital letter N in the very far left margin and if you just move the mouse around a bit, you'll get the bottom section of your dropdown...

Please ensure you read the articles I posted in my original repl about using these dreadful menus, and reconsider replacing them with others that are more robust and are accessible.

Also, putting your page through the html validator, bought up over 150 validation errors - and this way too many for such a simple page layout.

                            Results can be seen here:

                            http://validator.w3.org/check?verbose=1&uri=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.hedgehoppers.co.uk%2Findex1.h tml

These really should be fixed to ensure that the page is viewed correctly in all major browsers, but if you are new to html/dreamweaver, then it may be a little difficult for you to at this point - but they should most certainly be fixed.
