# How to get a light to point straight down from the ceiling

I can't believe I'm asking such a simple question, but still after many years of ae usage I'm still having trouble controlling ae lights. How do I make a spotlight point straight down to the floor from the ceiling by changing it's position and point of interest?

Is there any good tips on how to control lights in a smart way?

Any help will be appreciated! Thanks!

Layer --> Auto-Orient --> Off, zero out all rotation values,  then rotate by the required amount on the X axis...

Can I conclude from this that the light cannot be made to point straight down without changing it's rotation value? This is what is confusing to me since a camera can be made to point down just by changing its point of interest and position right (by using the toolpanel's orbit camera tool)?

If you want a spotlight to point straight down then the X and Z values for position and point of interest must be the same. If the Z value for point of interest is less than the z value of point of interest then the light will point straight down in relation to the comp world. It's exactly the same as a camera.

I just tested this by making a simple comp with a backwall and a floor. Then I created a light and changed both POI and position to 0,0,0 but the light is not pointing downwards but to the wall. How can I make it point downwards?

As Rick stated, the POI and the Position must have the same X and Z values, but the POI can have a different Y value (have the point of interest lower, but on the same X and Z axes).
