    Frames: need help!

    vixler Level 1
      I designed a page using frames in CS3. It had thumbnails on the left side of the page and when you clicked on them the larger image would show up on the right. I had set it to main frame. It was working fine in preview in Firefox. But when I uploaded it to the Website, instead of the images showing up on the right, they opened in different pages. Then, oddly, the page I had saved now does the same thing in Preview--the images show up on another page.

      Also, in Firefox but not Explorer, each thumbnail was almost an inch apart though they are all right next to each other (cell padding, spacing etc. are all set to 0).

          Um, you forgot to include the url in your post.

            Thanks. OK, slightly different problem now but still bad. I redid the page by copying the table into a new frameset. It shows up OK in preview. I uploaded the page to the site. I can't see any of the pictures although they have been uploaded to the server.

              This is not a framed site. There are tables, but no frames.

              So - this link -

              <td width="20%"> <a href="../illos/alpbarn72.jpg"
              target="mainFrame"><img src="../thumbs/alpthcs.jpg" alt="alpaca" width="80"
              height="80" /></a></td>

              which is from your page here -

              http://www.freewebs.com/vicky_rubin/port.html

              would imply that the image should be up one folder level, i.e., here -

              http://www.freewebs.com/illos/alpbarn72.jpg

              but it's neither there, nor here (guessing) -

              In addition, since you don't have frames, you definitely do not need the
              target="mainFrame" in your links.

              I suspect that a) your site is not properly defined (that would account for
              the incorrect 'go up one level' directive in your document relative links),
              and b) you have not uploaded the images to your site.

                The same thing happened again. It was frames and looked fine in preview in browser, Firefox; each thumb when clicked opened up the larger image on the right side of the page. Then I uploaded port and couldn't see pictures. Then I opened port again in Dreamweaver and the frame is no longer there. ??? This is exactly what happened before.

                The pictures are uploaded. I just re-uploaded some to make sure and they still don't show up.

                Just now I uploaded the right frame, rightport (that was after you replied) but it makes no difference, nothing shows up--I don't know if it's necessary to upload that too.

                  It is typical of new users that they use frames (a very poor choice), and it
                  is typical of new users using frames that they get confused by them, as you
                  obviously are. I suspect you have not yet understood that any framed site
                  consists of at least one page more than the number of frames - there is the
                  frameset file, and then there is a file for each frame in the frameset. I'm
                  betting that you are overwriting your frameset file with the menu frame, and
                  just uploading that page.

                  Notwithstanding that confusion, there is a further confusion about your
                  links to images. Those images are simply not on the server where your page
                  thinks they should be, as determined by the HTML code, and as I demonstrated
                  with the links in my previous post.
