Do you need the sound in AVI format? What I would do is go to - Edit > Preferences > Editors and link the WAV or MP3 member to sound editing software, like Adobe Audition. Then you can right click on the sound member in the cast and choose 'Launch External Editor'. That will open the audio which you can then save as an external sound file. Would that work for you?
In my experience of converting Director movies to video, I've always exported without sound and just use something like Premiere to do it. That would give you more control on the final video output.

Did you link the sound to an Sound Editor?
Then did you select teh sound cast member, and right click on it to get the popup menu?
