cannot install reader: corrupts all desktop icons

    iamsickofit

I just got myself a laptop with Vista Home. Twice now i have tried to load reader and acrobat on it, and it really creates a bad situation. First time was from a cd version of Acrobat bought a few years ago. Second time was of reader free version 9. Downloads OK, but following the installation, all icons (almost all) on the desktop find themselves transformed into the acrobat reader icon. Trying to open any of them causes a window to appear with the message: cannot open this file. The only way I can get thye laptop to mwork again is to uninstall Adobe reader, and all icons revert to normal immediately. What is going on? Thank you to anyone with an answer.
