    Object selection order.

    eboda_snaf Level 1

I wonder if there's a way to set the selection index as to the real selection order and not the creation order.

      e.g.

if i create 3 textframes on a page:

      named these as txtFrame1, txtFrame2 and txtFrame3.

I first select txtFrame3 followed by txtFrame1 and last txtFrame2 and assign them as TEXT tag.

in InDesign CS2, result will be:

The sequence in the XML structure will be exactly which I select and tag first.

which is: content of txtFrame3, then content of txtFrame1 and last content of txtFrame2.

      However in CS3/CS4

The sequence in the XML structure will be based on the creation of the txtFrames on the page.

which is: content of txtFrame1, then content of txtFrame2, content of txtFrame3!!!

Is there a way to have it as what the CS2 way?

      Thanks a million!!!

          hi

you can find the same question in post from last week (or older) - and answer is - no - no way

and I've asked same question - I think year ago - right after CS3 was ready - no sensible/logical answer ...

            Oh.. sad to know that.

I'm not sure whether it's still worthwhile to upgrade to CS4 since this will affect the productivity of my work....

( very sad and disappointed )

I still can't figure out the advantage of having the selection in the order of the object creation rather than the actual selection order.

            WHY WHY WHY?

Anyway, thanks for telling me that, at least I can stop hovering hope on the solution for this anymore.

since I'm doing product evalution for my users and customers.

I have no choice but to report all the restriction findings my existing CS2 users and customers.

I guess with their productivity highly affected,

adobe may loss more than hundreds of upgrade sales from these group of people.

                so sad..

to be honest ... I don't think they care ...

for me - removing this option is inexplicable - I can understand why some options can't be added at beginning - but I can't understand why 100% usefull information is removed in new version of program ... if somebody need to get order of creation - he can collect IDs of all selected objects and sort ...

Yes. It can be done, but it requires APID to be installed.

The easiest way is to create a selected event, and each time an object is selected, you'd write a dataStore in the object recording the current time.

Then when you want to sort by selected order, you'd read all the dataStores and sort the page items using that data.

                    HTH,

Oh.. you mean they don't even listen and care for customers/users feedback??

                      really huh??

                        APID?? What's that?

Is it very complicated? need to pay for that?

                          hi

APID is 'wrapper" for code written in JavaScript - you can execute JavaScript code when specified event occure and your JS code is converted to "plugin" (nobody will see your code) and like JS - it will be platform independent

I'm not using it - I'm not JS man - but it is very good product

It's called APID, and it's a very useful scripting tool!

Yes, it costs money, and its use ranges from the  intermediate to very

                            advanced.

                            Either way, it's highly recommended.

This is not a direct solution to your problem. But this is the way I do it: I create assignments ("articles"), The user drags all text frames onto to assignment and can rearrange the order by drag and drop. And then I use the assignment order to create the XML structure. It has the advantage that the user can add a frame at any time anywhere.
