    Can I Run 2-Instances of P6.5?

    windowman Community Member

I have an old movie that was done in 3x4 that I want to redo in 16x9 eventually. It's mostly just photos rather than footage, so going to 16x9 is no big deal. I still have all project files from the first time I did this movie, so all I really have to do is copy all the effects settings at the appropriate times. It would be a big help if I could just have two instances of P6.5 open at the same time--one with the old project and one with the new one so I could copy the settings easier. I've tried manually bringing up Priemere twice, but it doesn't seem to want to open a second instance of the program. Is there a change I could make in the registry or something that would make this possible to do? I searched the forum about this but didn't come up with anything.

Thanks so much Ann. Actually, I've been working on this for the past 45 minutes or so and have decided it's more trouble than it's worth no matter how I do it. On to something else....

Maybe you're well ahead of me on this one, but don't you also have CS3, or CS4? I know that Pr6.5 Projects open quite nicely in PrPro2, and would *assume* that they Open, or maybe Import into your versions of PrPro. You could Open your 6.5 Project in both Pr 6.5 and also in CS_x. Then you could finsish your editing in the CS version. Unless you have Matrox, or a lot of non-CS Effects. Remember to use a Copy of your .PROJ file, as once you do a Save from CS, you'll have a .PRPROJ file, that is very, very likely to never Open, or Import (if Pr 6.5 even allowed Project Import) into Pr 6.5.

              Good luck,

                Hi Bill,

I've been waiting to get done with this long term project I started in P6.5 last year before I installed the new version of Premiere because I was afraid of some of the things you were talking about. I should be done in a day or so, but before installing the new app I'm going to upgrade/rebuild my computer, so it'll still be a couple of weeks before I'm running 4.0 on it. Still looking into new cams too. I guess you, Ann, and others are right and that miniDV is in its death throes. I sure hate spending money though. Who was that Brit that said a couple of weeks ago that, "You can't spend your way out of a recession or borrow your way out of debt."? Boy he had it right.

I understand your problems. I also salute you for finishing all work in the version that you started with. Too many do not, and pay all sorts of prices for attempting to do it.

As for tape-based cameras, yes, they might be getting replaced. Pressure is coming from the consumer end, and also the pro and pro-sumer end. I'm still waiting and reading, as many of the formats seem frought with problems. By the time that I can afford a complete new workstation, and will be ready for CS4, or CS5, I hope that many of these issues are resolved. It will make any decision on a camera a bit easier. Of course, by then there will be some NEW format, and it will be causing issues...

                  Good luck,

                  Hunt

PS, if you have the screen real estate, I've run PrPro 2 and PE4 at the same time, on the same machine. Don't have PE4 on the workstation with the dual 21" CRT's, and trying to use both on the 17" laptop is, well a challange, still I've done it. Where I'm going with this is, that I *think* one could run P6.5 and CS4 (depending on computing horsepower and screen real estate), if needed. However, I have not attempted to prove this.

Absolutely not!  If you intend to edit your standard definition media with Premiere, then a tape based MiniDV model is still the absolute best choice, no question about it.  If all you want to do is watch the clips, or of you have another consumer level editor, then by all means, consider something else.

Thanks; like a lot of people, I do have some older projects that I might want to pull out and work with in the future, so I'll keep that in mind.

What I'm saying is--SD is on the way out it seems and tape based cams with it. Sure there are still problems editing AVCHD at the moment but probably not for long.

Canon is really pushing the whole tapeless HD consumer thing now in a big way. Have you seen some of the new models like the VIXIA HF S10 and S100? They're both the same cam, one w/a built-in hard drive; the other uses SDHC memory cards. They have a 8.5Mega-Pixel 1/2.6" CMOS chip (that's closer to a 2/3" than a 1/2"), and I'm not sure of the lens size, but the filter threads are 58mm which is sizable for any non-pro cam and ought to provide great low light shooting. They shoot a good fake 24P from what I hear in AVCHD at the full 24Mbps bandwith. They have hot shoe and mic ins with manual gains, zebra, color bars, etc. If only the hadn't left off the view finder.... You can probably get the S100 for under a grand. And of course they have cheaper HD cams than these. It's quickly getting to the point where people will feel silly buying an SD cam when there's a HD model sitting next to it for a couple hundred more.

OK.  That one I'll grant you.
