How to controll my external midi drum machine??

    T_Townrampage Community Member

I am about to blow a head gasket, I need some good ol' fashion help.

I want to be able to control my drum machine using Audition.  I want to hit play in audition and start drum machine.

Can someone please walk me through the process of setting this up?

      Thanks!

I don't know anything about MIDI in Audition - I never wanted it to be there in the first place. But since nobody has answered your question, I'll take a guess that if you have a suitable MIDI track in the sequencer, then you need to allocate an output channel (the right-pointing arrow in settings) to it that your drum machine can recieve on (usually channel 10 for drum tracks). Then, when you hit play, the MIDI stream will be sent.

If this doesn't work, then repost your question on the AudioMasters forum, where there are plenty of people who actually use MIDI in Audition who should be able to help - to all intents and purposes this is now a useless forum from many points of view, and this is one of them.

Thanks Steve, Ill give Audio Masters a shot.  I know there has got to be a way to do this.

I have limited midi knowledge as well but there may also be a way to send an on/off type midi command to your drum machine if you're simply looking to turn on the drum loop. I do this with external midi lighting controllers. You just have to record an appropriate midi sequence, which in your case may be a sequence of midi notes to play a sequence of midi triggered drums, or a simple midi "on" command to trigger your drum machine on.

With the exception of lighting, I never use Audition to play midi instruments or anything. If I need a midi instrument sound, I actually use a midi keyboard to play that sound and record it into Audition as a wav, essentially taking the midi out of the equation from that point forward.

If you're looking to just sync the machine, you can send the SMPTE clock source to the drum machine thru a USB cable. This should work but you can't record at the same time in Audition while the clock is being sent(persistant bug for years). Playback should not be a problem. Alternately, you can send the clock from the drum machine via USB to Audition as the slave. This would allow you to record while the drum is playing and things should stay properly timed.

Steve G, do you think we could get in a feature request to take MIDI out of Audition?

                Best to all of you,

                John K

We most certainly can! Don't know if it will do any good though - even if I say it's more than just me who'd like to lose it. But hey, it's not so bad, is it? I mean, I'm quite happy to take the credit for having it completely hidden from normal users. I was, after all, pretty openly accused of being responsible for this by the developers, (just because of the complaining), but hey, I'm perfectly cool with that. Happier than I'd be if I had to stare at its ugly fizzog every time I opened MV, anyway...

I use midi in Audition 1.5, of course all you can really do is import a midi track, and then play it back through whatever midi port you specify. That functionality serves my purposes well.

I actually use a padKontrol midi controller in Audition 3 to serve sort of as a shortcut keypad. I have different pads assigned to different effects in edit view and different commands like zooming, recording, playing, stopping, etc.... in MV view. This allows me to control Audition 3 from my piano which is across the room from my pc.

These things really barely qualify as midi functionality though, since I'm not talking about virtual instruments or anything....
