1. Re: customizing text to speech issue
choa developer Jun 16, 2009 8:17 AM (in response to Russ_E)I am having exactly the same problem. I have tried modifying words in the editor both with and without Captivate running.
The words pronounce correctely in the editor, but revert to the original word when played in Captivate.
Does anybody have any suggestions?

RoboWizard Jun 16, 2009 9:43 AM (in response to choa developer)Hi there
I have a silly question. After you tweaked the settings, you *DID* remember to delete the original file created using TTS and allow Kate or Paul to re-create the text to speech, no?
Cheers... Rick

3. Re: customizing text to speech issue
choa developer Jun 16, 2009 12:54 PM (in response to RoboWizard)Certainly not a silly question.
There is little information on how to do this.
So, basically you are saying that from the editor, we delete the file rather than saving it?
Thanks,
Ron

4. Re: customizing text to speech issue
Russ_E Jun 16, 2009 1:18 PM (in response to choa developer)I believe he is asking if after customizing the word in the dictionary editor (and saving it of course), if we have captivate re-convert the text to speech so we get a fresh audio file.
If that is indeed what you are asking, not a silly question but I only wish it were that simple.
I will usually restart cap and then begin a new project from scratch in a desperate attempt to have it read my changes.
Just as an fyi, I had a lengthy virtual session with one of the adobe technical support reps last thursday and we walked through numerous ways of clearing any extraneouus dat/temp files but still couldn't get it to work.
They are supposedly working on it right now and hopefully I will have a positive update to post.
thanks,
Russ

8. Re: customizing text to speech issue
pilms Jun 17, 2009 10:33 AM (in response to Russ_E)This is a VERY frustrating problem. I've tried a million ways to get it to work on my machine as well, and nothing does. As a suggestion to Adobe, perhaps it has something to do with admin rights to the machine? I had to have an IT guy install this for me at work, because they took away our admin rights years ago. I remember the entire text-to-speech feature didn't work right away because of permissions.
The only workaround that took me a while to think of (duh), was to modify the spelling of words directly in my presentation text to mimic the desired pronunciation. Essentially doing the same thing as editing the dictionary, only you have to repeat everywhere the text shows up, instead of just one source file.
Annoying yes, but it makes a world of difference for me on a couple of items. I now write "Des Moines" as "De Moine", otherwise I hear "Dez Moinez".

Captiv8r Jun 17, 2009 10:37 AM (in response to pilms)Sorry, I know you are frustrated and it isn't Friday. But I just can't resist.
Why isn't phonetic spelled like it sounds?
Ducking for cover now...

10. Re: customizing text to speech issue
choa developer Jun 18, 2009 8:20 AM (in response to Captiv8r)Guys,
I may have solved this problem. I know it now works for me and it is worth a try.
If this works, someone please advise Adobe of the fix.
I am a bit of a hacker and in the bin folder I noticed a couple of dll files.
Normally dll's are located under Windows\System32 so I copied them into Windows and now my changes in the dictionary are being accepted.
The location of the files: C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Captivate 4\VT\Paul\M16\bin
Please let me know if it works for you too.

13. Re: customizing text to speech issue
Russ_E Jul 13, 2009 7:34 AM (in response to Russ_E)Resolved!!!
Kudos to tech support, the answer was to make the exact same changes to BOTH voice dictionaries.
Or, as I am doing, change one of them and then copy the file to the other.
Why they cannot just share the same file or live independently, I do not know.
Regardless I am thrilled to have it working properly now!
thanks to anyone who lent their support or suggestions.
Russ
