1. Re: How does the VBR 2-Pass Preview Work?
Harm Millaard May 23, 2009 8:12 AM (in response to Typhoon859)Why is that relevant? Don't you trust your own encoding settings? The thumbnail preview is only useful to watch where the encoding process is, you can't judge quality from that.

2. Re: How does the VBR 2-Pass Preview Work?
Typhoon859 May 23, 2009 8:15 AM (in response to Harm Millaard)That's exactly why I want to know. The thing where my project keeps failing. I think I know where the problem is but I'd need the answer to this for confirmation.

4. Re: How does the VBR 2-Pass Preview Work?
Jeff Bellune May 23, 2009 8:39 AM (in response to Typhoon859)I asked about this myself a long time ago, but I never got an answer. I even filed a bug report on it.
IIRC, tests that I did myself at the time were not conclusive. Maybe I'll revisit the issue. Or maybe I'll just wait for someone else to do it.

Typhoon859 May 23, 2009 8:40 AM (in response to Harm Millaard)I was contemplating where I should ask this. I should've asked this in my other thread.. Sorry. This question only needs a yes or no... It's much easier just to say one word than all that... Thats all I need to know...

With the current 4.02 version of the AME, I *don't* trust my own encoding settings. The AME has this nasty habit of ignoring things like bit rate changes that I make and reverting to its default settings during the encoding process.

7. Re: How does the VBR 2-Pass Preview Work?
Typhoon859 May 23, 2009 8:42 AM (in response to Jeff Bellune)Oh... I thought the answer was simple... I thought it was like mentioned by Adobe how it works. But ok, either way, the first pass would be half-way through while the preview could be only like at a third way in right? I don't really need specifics.

Yes, that has happened to me before as well.

That's as reasonable an explanation as any, I guess. But it seems that the progress bar and the preview match up exactly. And that begs the question - so what is the purpose of the preview? A visual progress bar that has no real relationship to the frame currently being encoded? It's not very useful if that's the case. I'd like to know that if rendering progress is slowed significantly at one point, that the preview is showing which frame is causing trouble.
Most folks have the preview turned off because it does slow down performance. I suspect that's why it's not been a hot topic of discussion. However, with 8 real cores and 16 GB of RAM, I figure I can get away with showing the preview.

10. Re: How does the VBR 2-Pass Preview Work?
Bill Hunt May 23, 2009 8:53 AM (in response to Typhoon859)Though it does not address your question, if you have a Project that is failing and wish to know exactly where, it might be better to use 1 pass, and just watch the progress dialog to find out an approximate Timecode, where the failure takes place. Don't know how it is in CS4, but unfortunately, in previous versions, Render, or Export would fail, and the dialog box would close. This meant that one had to watch the progress carefully and hope to grab the Timecode, before the box closed. The best way around that was to just set up a video camera to shoot the screen. Go get a cup of coffee and let PrPro fail. Run back the tape in the video camera, and note the point that it failed. Go to that spot in the Timeline and investigate carefully.
Now, if this is not what you needed to do in the end, ignore my post.
As Harm mentions, you might get more useful info, if you tell us in detail what your problem is, and what you hope to accomplish. Very often, there's "more than one way to skin this cat." [I have no idea what any of us would do with a "skin-less cat," but there was an old thread in the Lounge on a "hairless cat... "]
Good luck,
Hunt

Typhoon859 May 23, 2009 8:54 AM (in response to Jeff Bellune)Yeah... That's what has been bugging me - that the progress bar was perfectly synced with the video... Well ok, I guess it's confirmed.
And uh... You have twice the amount of cores as me and twice the amount of memory.. Lol, how do you have 8 cores? 2 processors?

12. Re: How does the VBR 2-Pass Preview Work?
Typhoon859 May 23, 2009 8:58 AM (in response to Bill Hunt)No no, it's fine. I got it. I realize this now and I know exactly where the problem is. I don't think it's something I did in the project. I think it's the video or AVISynth code itself.. I'm going to try a few things now. I didn't realize that VBR 2-Pass worked that dumb and I thought that the preview keeps up with each pass. That's why I wasn't finding any problems. I mean, I still haven't but it makes more sense now...

Jeff Bellune May 23, 2009 9:00 AM (in response to Bill Hunt)I think the OP started this thread just to ask about the preview. I applaud that effort as opposed to polluting existing threads. In this topic, the failing project is a red herring, Detective Hunt.

I have dual quad-core Xeons.
FWIW, Sorenson Squeeze does the same thing. I can't get a video preview in Squeeze, but if I choose 2-pass VBR, the first pass is complete when the progresss bar shows 50%.

I dunno. I was gonna ask you.
I like a light chablis with salmon, but I think herring needs something bolder.

PS - everything I know about wine is stored safely in my dad's brain. None of it is stored here in mine.

Harm Millaard May 23, 2009 9:40 AM (in response to Bill Hunt)What wine does one serve with red herring? Appreciate the insight.
There is no such thing as RED herring, at least not in terms of food. The only edible one is the raw, salted herring and you don't drink wine to accompany it. You use ice-cold Corenwijn, which although it contains the word wijn (wine in English) is a brandy, like jenever.
If you did not mean the food, ANY wine you feel like is good, a Gevrey Chambertin, a Baron de L, whatever to attract the interest of the party you want to lure.

20. Re: How does the VBR 2-Pass Preview Work?
Bill Hunt May 23, 2009 9:42 AM (in response to Typhoon859)I agree with you. This is a pretty casual group and I would not want it to any other way. Still, do not dismiss the vast knowledge represented in this forum, myself excluded. The great majority take what they do very, very seriously, but themselves - well, not so much.
Good luck with your Project, and sorry for getting side-tracked a bit on what I thought was maybe another problem.
Keep the questions coming,

22. Re: How does the VBR 2-Pass Preview Work?
Harm Millaard May 23, 2009 9:55 AM (in response to Typhoon859)We Dutch don't consider that edible. There is only one form of edible herring and that is the raw salted one. Smoking is what you do with eel or mackerel and of course salmon, although the raw marinated salmon is even better. But all go very well with Corenwijn.
